Teaching

A shot I took of the old trestle bridge in Beaver Town, AR.

My teaching career began at ECC Foreign Language Institute in Osaka, Japan in 2015. I worked in their Eikaiwa and Corporate Divisions as a Native English Instructor until I returned to the United States in 2017 to pursue my graduate studies. Since then, I’ve taught undergraduate and graduate courses in a range of subjects, including Japanese, Phonetics, Sociocultural Linguistics, General Linguistics, and pedagogy. Descriptions of the linguistics courses I have taught can be found in this section of the UCSB Course Catalog and descriptions of the Japanese courses can be found on this page of the UCSB Japanese Program’s website.

The Graduate Student Association (GSA) at UC Santa Barbara recognized my teaching with the Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2022-2023 academic year.

[Y]ou go above and beyond to develop lesson plans that aren’t just informative and engaging, but also promote exploration of marginalized languages and cultures and encourage self-reflection.
